Steamed green beans with onion garlic topping.

Steamed Green Beans with Onion Garlic Topping

Preparation

Start by cutting the ends of the green beans off. The beauty of using French green beans is that you can usually skip this step as they come packaged and trimmed. Wash the beans under lukewarm water.

Add ½ cup of water to the steamer pot and place the beans in the steamer basket or follow the steamer cooking instructions. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes or until the beans reach your desired texture. I normally turn on the water to boil while I am cleaning and trimming the beans so that when I add them to the steamer basket they start steaming right away.

If you don’t have a steamer, pour a 1/2 cup of water into a large pan and place the beans in the pan as well. Cover with a lid and cook/steam. Keep an eye on the pan to make sure there is always water on the bottom. Add more as required until the beans are cooked.

While the beans are steaming, dice the onion and mince the garlic. Heat up the oil in a small pot on medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the onions and sauté until translucent, 2-3 minutes.

Turn the heat down to low and add the garlic. Sauté for another 30 seconds, just until the garlic is fragrant. Remove from the heat source.

Once the beans are cooked, move to a medium bowl and pour the oil, onion, garlic mixture over the beans. Season with salt and pepper and stir until beans are coated.

Serve on the side of your favourite main dish.

Substitutions

The onion and garlic topping is great on other veggies like broccoli or a

sparagus.
