Oven-Baked Italian Sausage with Onions

The simplest of dinners, oven-baked Italian sausage with onions is an underrated meal. It’s quick, easy, incredibly delicious and pairs with any sides for a complete meal.

Oven-baked Italian sausage with onions is a very simple dish. Because of its simplicity, it makes for an easy weeknight meal. While the sausages bake you can prep your sides and set the table and have dinner on the table in 40 minutes.

Depending on your family’s preference you can choose spicy Italian sausages to make this dish pop. We usually make three spicy sausages, for Kyle and me, and two mild sausages for the girls. It’s a great and easy way to cater to everyone’s taste without any extra work.

See our post on freezing Italian sausages to make this meal even more doable any night of the week.

Since I buy my sausages in bulk and freeze them, this is one of those meals that I whip up when I’m out of ideas. It is the best way to make your weeknight dinner a breeze. Bake the sausages while making the sides at the same time. Easy peasy!

Preparing Oven-Baked Italian Sausage with Onions

Ingredients

Italian sausage:  Italian sausage in North America is raw meat, usually pork, seasoned with fennel and sometimes spices. You can use either spicy or mild Italian sausage for this dish. If you do choose spicy take that into account when adding the red pepper flakes to make sure it’s not too spicy to eat.

Yellow onion: Onion is a very common vegetable that is used both raw and cooked in food preparation. It has a sharp flavour raw that often sweetens once cooked. There are many varieties of onions, some that are milder than others. We use the common onion or yellow onion in this recipe.

How to Make Oven-Baked Italian Sausage

Prep

This is by far the best way to cook Italian sausages in the oven. So, let’s start by preheating the oven to 400°F.

Next, you can spray the baking dish with cooking spray, although this is optional. The sausages usually have enough fat that they don’t stick to the dish too much. You can see in the video below that they are easily moved.

Place the sausages in the baking dish about one inch apart. You don’t want to crowd the sausages because they won’t cook evenly.

How long does it take to bake Italian Sausages in the oven?

In total it takes about 35-40 minutes to bake Italian sausages in the oven. This gives the sausages enough time to cook through and get nice and crispy and the onions a chance to brown a little.

Bake

Once the oven is heated place the baking dish with the sausages in the oven for 15 minutes.

While the sausages are baking, peel and slice the onions into 1/8-inch slices. You can make the slices thicker if you prefer but they may need more time to bake to your liking if you prefer a more caramelized onion.

When the

timer goes off, take the sausages out of the oven and flip them. Then top with the onion slices and place back in the oven for another 20 25 minutes minutes depending on how browned you want the onions.

Once the timer goes off, remove the sausages from the oven and serve with your favourite sides.

Substitutions

Italian sausage: You can use any kind of sausage that you like. Depending on the type and size, you may need to adjust the cooking time. Try a smoked sausage to switch things up! It will cook faster because it’s not raw and it will taste delicious with the sweet onions.

Yellow onions: You can use any kind of onion as most varieties will become sweeter as they cook.

What to Serve with Italian Sausage

Oven-baked Italian sausages are so versatile. In my opinion, they go with everything! Try them with our mac and cheese and Caesar salad or sweet potato fries and spinach salad. Either way, you can’t go wrong.
