Getting perfectly crispy potatoes has never been easier than with these basic oven-baked potato wedges.
Meat and potatoes are a staple in our house so these basic oven-baked potato wedges appear often. This is the recipe I go to when I don’t know what to make as a side. I always have G&K All-Purpose Spice on hand and there are always a few potatoes lurking somewhere.
A nice crispy fry or wedge goes a long way with the kiddos so I can feel confident that if I have these bad boys on the table they will eat. Having a kid-friendly dinner side is a god-send so why not make potato wedges on regular rotation?
I prefer to make these potato wedges versus fries for two reasons. One is that there is less chopping. The other one is that they’re easier to flip mid-baking so I always get that perfect crispness with minimal effort.
Preparing Simple Crispy Oven-Baked Potato Wedges
Ingredients
Potatoes: This root vegetable is starchy and is native to the Americas. Potatoes are rich in vitamin C and potassium and even contain small amounts of protein. There are many varieties and shades of potatoes. I like yellow flesh potatoes for this recipe but any type will work great.
Olive oil: I use olive oil for this recipe because of its mild flavour. Olive oil is the fat extracted from olives. The least processed is extra virgin olive oil, which I use in this recipe.
G&K All Purpose Spice: A combination of spices and herbs, this all-purpose seasoning is made for meals like this. Make a batch in advance and always have it handy to add to your protein or veggies.
How to Make Basic Oven-Baked Potato Wedges
As the name indicates, these are pretty basic oven-baked potato wedges so there are very few steps.
Start by preheating the oven to 400°F.
Step 1: Prep the Potatoes
Next, it’s time to prep the potatoes. Wash the potatoes under cold running water. If they seem extra dirty I scrub them a little with a bristle brush.
Once the potatoes are washed, it’s time to turn them into wedges. Simply cut each small potato into 8 pieces and larger ones into 12 wedges.
How to cut potatoes into wedges?
To cut a small potato into 8 pieces first cut it in half length-wise. Next, take each half and cut in half once again, also length-wise. And repeat this process one more time by cutting the quarters into half length-wise once more.
If you have large potatoes, you will cut the quarters into 3 wedges each rather than just in half.
This should give you fairly even pieces ensuring that they bake easily.
Step 2: Season the wedges
Now that the potatoes are ready, move them to a large bowl. Then top them with olive oil, salt and G&K All-Purpose Spice.
Using two silicone spatulas, toss the potatoes in the oil and spices until they are all evenly coated. This may take a minute or two.
Step 3: Bake the Potato wedges
Finally, line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper then distribute the potatoes in an even layer.
TIP: Lay the wedges once cut side down to make perfectly crisp potato wedges.
Bake the potatoes in the oven for 20 minutes. Once the timer goes off, using an oven mitt, remove the pan from the oven. Turn all the wedges over and place the sheet pan back in the oven for another 20 minutes.
Substitutions
Potatoes: Well you can replace the potatoes in potato wedges but you can use different varieties. I like to use yellow potatoes because they’re more moist and have a slightly sweeter flavour. And that’s what I always have in the house. However, if you’re a russet potato or red potato family both are great in this recipe.
G&K All Purpose Spice: This seasoning is my go-to because I always have it on hand. And if I don’t I always have these four simple ingredients to make the spice. If you want to keep it simple just salt and a little pepper will be great. If you have some paprika or chili powder try those instead of the G&K All Purpose Spice.
