Turmeric Rice

Turmeric rice is the easiest way to brighten up your meal with both colour and flavour. Simple to make and beautiful to look at.

Turmeric rice brightens up every meal! Rice is always an easy side to any meal but it can get boring really fast. There are many ways to spruce it up but this is by far the easiest. Only one extra step to brighten up any meal, with colour and flavour!

Not only is it a great side, but turmeric rice is also a fantastic base for bowls, stir-frys and anything with a sauce!

Preparing Turmeric Rice

Ingredients

Turmeric: Turmeric is a plant from the same family as ginger. On the outside, it looks just like ginger but peeling it reveals a bring yellow, almost orange flesh. For this recipe, we use dry or powdered turmeric which is a dried and ground form of the spice.

Long-grain white rice: Basmati and Jasmine rice are both types of long-grain rice as well as American long-grain white and brown rice. Long-grain rice stays fluffy when cooked and separates nicely.

How to Make Turmeric Rice

My favourite way to cook rice is in the microwave. All you need is a microwave same dish. I use a 2.5 quart CorningWare dish with a lid. It never fails. Plus, CorningWare dishes are also great in the oven.

Once you have your microwave safe dish, grab the ingredients and let’s get cooking.

Add all ingredients to the microwave-safe dish and stir to combine all ingredients.

Place the dish in the microwave with the lid on. Set the cooking time to 20 minutes and the power level to 60%.

TIP for setting the power level on a microwave: Most microwaves have either a ‘power’ or ‘power level’ button. The power level will be entered in either single digits – 6 = 60% – or double digits – 60 = 60%. If you haven’t used this feature before a quick internet search will yield videos for your specific microwave oven.

Substitutions

You can use any type of rice that you have on hand. Note the brown rice will require an additional 5 minutes or so to fully cook. The best substitutions are most long-grain non-sticky rice like jasmine.

Serving Turmeric Rice

Try this turmeric rice with our Mediterranean Chicken Skillet or Yogurt Marinated Chicken.

A fun serving tip is to take the hot rice and pack it into a small bowl or ramekin. Leave to shape for a few minutes then turn upside down onto your plate for a restaurant-worthy side. Don’t forget a sprinkle of parsley to elevate it even further.
