Oven-baked sweet potato fries are the perfect addition to any meal. They are slightly sweet, almost creamy on the inside and so full of flavour.
Is there anything better than delicious sweet potato fries straight out of the oven?Â
They are crisp on the outside, creamy on the inside and oh so flavourful. They are also the perfect dipping mechanism.Â
When we make these they disappear in a heartbeat. We just can’t get enough. If your kids like sweet potatoes they will not be able to resist these amazing fries.Â
Preparing Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Fries
Ingredients
Sweet potatoes: Sweet potatoes are a starchy and sweet root vegetable. The flesh of this vegetable is orange in colour, once peeled. They are a good source of fiber, potassium, and Vitamins A and C.
Chili powder: This powder is made up of various varieties of dried chilies. The chilies are dried then ground and combined into this spice mix. Sometimes other spices are mixed in as well which is why you may find that different brands have slightly different flavours.
Garlic Powder: Garlic powder is dehydrated garlic ground to a powder. It’s sweeter than raw garlic so it just adds a hint of garlic flavour without the sharpness.
Corn starch: Corn starch is a flour made from corn kernels. It is a white powder, finer than other flours and is most often used as a thickening agent. Here we use it to help create a crip outside on the fries.
Olive oil: Olive oil is the fat extracted from olives. The least processed is extra virgin olive oil, which I use in this recipe.
How to Make Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Fries
Start by preheating the oven to 425°F.
Next, you need to prep the potatoes. Peel the sweet potatoes using a peeling knife, if you have one. I like to rinse them under cold water once peeled to make sure any dirt from the skins is removed.
Cut the potatoes into half-inch matchsticks. I like to cut the potatoes into half-inch sections. Lay those flat and cut into half-inch fries. Place them in a large bowl.
Now you need to add more flavour. You can either add the spices directly into the bowl with the potatoes or mix them separately in a separate bowl, then add to the sweet potatoes.
Add, the remaining ingredients to the sweet potatoes and stir to coat the fries. I like to use silicone spatulas as they help to spread the spices more and also don’t damage the fries.
Line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper and lay the fries in a single layer on the pan.
Place in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. When the time is up, remove the fries from the oven, flip them using a spatula and place them back in the oven for another 15 minutes.
Remove the fries from the oven and serve immediately.
Substitutions
Chili Powder: if you don’t have chili powder you can use paprika instead. It will change the flavour slightly but will still yield an amazing
result.Serving Sweet Potato Fries
Oven-baked sweet potato fries are the perfect side to any protein. They add a nice balance of flavour to savoury meals. And since they are packed with nutrients you can feel good about serving these every day.
Add dips to the fries to make them even more appealing to your kiddos. For the kids, I serve these sweet potato fries with our garlic aioli and for Kyle and I, we always go for chipotle mayo.
