Nut Butter Chocolate Overnight Oats

Nut butter and chocolate overnight oats are the perfect breakfast treat. They require a few simple ingredients and just a few minutes to put together. The best part is that you can quickly make a batch that will last you all week.

One of my favourite things about these nut butter chocolate overnight oats is that it’s basically a treat for breakfast.

We use very simple ingredients to make a delicious and healthy breakfast the night before.

This recipe is for one serving but let’s not kid ourselves. You should be making at least 4 at a time. These overnight oats can sit in the fridge for days so you can easily have breakfast ready to go every day of the week.

Don’t be fooled by the serving quantity. This recipe is packed with fiber and protein to keep you full for longer. 

Preparing Nut Butter Chocolate Overnight Oats

Ingredients

Vanilla yogurt: Greek yogurt is yogurt that has had whey and other liquids strained from it. It’s thicker and creamier than other types of yogurt. Vanilla is just flavouring that is added to plain Greek yogurt.

brown dried leaves on groundRolled oats: Also called old-fashioned or whole oats, these oats are steamed and pressed to gain their shapes. These are most commonly used to make granola and in baking.

Almond milk: Almond milk is made by soaking almonds in water, and then draining and grinding them with fresh water. The liquid is strained through a cheesecloth leaving ‘almond milk’ behind. If you purchase almond milk it may contain some additional ingredients to add flavour, and sweetness and improve the texture of the milk. Almond milk on its own isn’t highly nutritious however you can purchase fortified versions that are high in Vitamin D, calcium, zinc, vitamin B12, and Vitamin A, among others.

Almond butter: Almond butter is a type of nut butter made from grinding almonds. It can be smooth or crunchy just like peanut butter and is full of protein, healthy fats and many minerals.

Chia seeds: Chia seeds are very high in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids and protein. They are the edible seeds of a plant and are a complete plant-based protein.

Flax seeds: High in fibre and omega-3 fatty acids, flax seeds are a great way to boost the nutritional value of any dish. Most experts recommend the use of ground flax seeds for better digestion and therefore better absorption of nutrients.

How to Make Nut Butter Chocolate Overnight Oats

There are a few ways you can go about making these nut butter chocolate overnight oats. The core recipe relies on you having a mini whisk to stir the ingredients inside the jar.

Add all of the ingredients into the jar and stir using a small whisk until everything is well combined. Place in the fridge overnight to enjoy in the morning.

These oats will keep in the fridge for up to a week.

TIP: If

you don’t have a small whisk that fits nicely into the mason jar, add the dry ingredients to the jar first. Then in a separate bowl combine the milk, chocolate and nut butter. Place in the microwave for 20-30 seconds until the nut butter softens. Whisk or stir the soft nut butter, chocolate syrup and milk until well combined.

Pour the mixture over the dry ingredients in the jar, close the lid and give it a good shake. Store on the fridge overnight.

TIP: This recipe makes a thick, yogurt-like consistency. If you prefer runnier oats add 1/3 cup of milk instead of the suggested 1/4 cup. If you want to go wild, add 1/2 cup. 

Substitutions

Almond Butter: You can use any nut butter that you like here. Peanut butter and almond butter have the strongest flavours so you may need to add a little more if you are using a different variety.

Chocolate Syrup: If you don’t happen to have chocolate syrup on hand, you can easily melt some milk chocolate or use Nutella.

Serving Nut Butter Chocolate Overnight Oats

The beauty of overnight oats is that you can just grab the jar and a spoon and have them whenever and wherever. Eating them right out of the jar is highly recommended.

How long can I keep overnight oats in the fridge?

The ‘overnight’ part of overnight oats indicates the minimum time the oats should be in the fridge. I have kept overnight oats in the fridge for up to a week without the texture being compromised.

  • Combine all of the ingredients in an 8oz mason jar.
    ¼ cup vanilla yogurt, ¼ cup rolled oats, ¼ cup almond milk, ½ tbsp chocolate syrup, 1 tsp chia seeds, 1 tsp flax seeds, 1 tbsp nut butter
  • Stir together using a small whisk.
  • Cover with a lid and place in the fridge overnight.
