The second reason to make your own spice mix is because then you’ll never run out. Even if you missed one of the ingredients listed, or you didn’t have enough of a few, you can still have a delicious fajita without having to go to the store.

Preparing Fajita Spice Mix

Ingredients

spoon of red powderPaprika: I use sweet paprika, or just paprika which is most commonly found in grocery stores. It is not sweet in the sugary sense, but compared to its spicy and smoked siblings it is definitely the sweetest of them all.

Onion powder: Onion powder is made from dehydrated onions which are then ground. White, yellow or red onions can be used to make onion powder. It is a very common spice that is used in many spice mixes.

Chili powder:  This powder is made up of various varieties of dried chilies. The chilies are dried then ground and combined into this spice mix. Sometimes other spices are mixed in as well which is why you may find that different brands have slightly different flavours.

Sugar: White or granulated sugar is refined sugar made from either cane sugar or beet sugar. It is completely freed of molasses through the refining process and ground into granules smaller than salt.

How to Make Fajita Spice Mix

No need to list any steps here. All you have to do is measure out each of the spices and add them to a small bowl or a small mason jar. Stir them well to combine. Use immediately or keep in an airtight container to use later.

How to use Fajita Seasoning?

This fajita spice mix is excellent over protein and veggies. Slice a couple of chicken breasts, half an onion and some peppers and sauté. Add the cornstarch to your fajita spice mix and add to the chicken and veggies with a couple of tablespoons of water or stock. Serve on a tortilla wrap.

Another way to use this seasoning is in our one-pot Mexican chicken and rice dinner.
