Preparing Easy Homemade Tartar Sauce

Ingredients

Mayonnaise: Mayo is made from eggs, oil and usually vinegar or lemon. When mixing these at high speeds you will get a white creamy texture like you find in a jar on the grocery store shelves.

Red bell pepper: The sweetness of red bell pepper is unbeatable in this recipe. Red peppers are the more mature version of the more bitter and earthy green pepper. Though they are technically a fruit, bell peppers are typically used as a vegetable in cooking. Red bell peppers are high in vitamins C and A.

sugar, spices such as mustard seed and celery seed and onions. Some recipes call for a bit of blue food colouring to intensify the bright green colour. Sometimes red peppers are also added for colour.

Yellow onion: Onion is a very common vegetable that is used both raw and cooked in food preparation. It has a sharp flavour raw that often sweetens once cooked. There are many varieties of onions, some that are milder than others. We use the common onion or yellow onion in this recipe.

How to Make the Best Homemade Tartar Sauce from Scratch

Making tartar sauce at home is very easy.

Step 1: Prep the produce

Start by finely dicing bell pepper and onion. Next, juice half a lemon.

TIP: If you don’t have onion and/or bell pepper you can actually skip those. I do however recommend that you keep the lemon juice.

Step 2: Make the sauce

Combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl or mason jar. You can also use a 1-cup glass measuring cup. Stir the ingredients well to make sure they are well combined.

Substitutions

Relish: You can use pickles instead of adding relish though I do love the sweetness that the relish adds. Try bread and butter pickles for a gentler flavour.

Serving Homemade Tartar Sauce

You likely know tartar sauce to be served with fish and chips. But I am here to tell you that battered fish is just the start of the options.

Firstly, I love to serve this sauce with any style of white fish. Whether you fry it, bake it or barbecue it this homemade sauce is a must on the side.

Naturally, if you’re making a fish sandwich tartar sauce is the only spread you should be adding.

With that said, try the sauce out on a chicken sandwich as well. Or even on a chicken burger.

Lastly, this tartar sauce makes for an excellent dip for crab cakes, fish cakes and even shrimp.

Storing Homemade Tartar Sauce

The longer the sauce sits the better the flavour will be. So store your sauce in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to a month.

I like to make a batch once in a while just to have some on hand in case I need it.
