Smoked Salmon avocado toast.

Avocado Toast 6 Ways

Avocado toast can be incredibly simple but sophisticated. These six easy ways to make avocado toast will have you making it for breakfast every day.

Avocado toast is only a craze if you’re eating it when don’t like it (if that’s even possible). Otherwise, it’s an amazing way to eat a sandwich. I will admit that I wasn’t into avocado toast right away. It was a trend of the 2010s that I tried to push off for quite some time.

Luckily, I finally caved and gave it a try. I was sold immediately. Now it’s just a regular part of our breakfast menu.

We are fortunate enough to have avocados here in Canada year-round. With that said you don’t always buy them when they’re ready to be consumed. More often than not you get them from the grocery store when they’re hard and green on the outside. A long way away from being creamy and delicious.

TIP: Plan to have avocado toast a few days after your grocery pickup to give it time to ripen. Once ripe, put them in the fridge to extend their life for up to a week. I’ve managed even longer than that on a few occasions.

Preparing Avocado Toast

Ingredients for Basic Avocado Toast

Avocado: Avocado is actually a fruit, a berry in fact, and is sometimes also called butter fruit or alligator pear. It’s absolutely the star of this show. It has a soft green inside once ripe and can go bad pretty quickly. Once cut open the best way to preserve avocado is to keep the pit in and cover it as tightly to the flesh as possible with plastic wrap or a wax wrap.

Lemon: The lemon adds a fresh kick to the sometimes bland avocado. It is also highlighted by salt and pepper.

Hemp Seeds: Also called hemp hearts, these little seeds provide a great texture balance to the avocado by adding a subtle crunch to our avocado toast. Not to mention that hemp seeds provide many important nutrients in just a small amount.

How to Make Avocado Toast

Basic Avocado Toast

There really is nothing simpler. Start by toasting some bread. This is truly the longest part of the toast making. While your bread is in the toaster get your avocado ready.

Tip on working with avocado: You can tell that it’s ripe when it’s just slightly soft and very dark on the outside. When you cut into it you will be met with resistance by a pit that sits in the middle of the fruit. Keep your knife steady and rotate the avocado all the way around length-wise. Once you have gone all the way around, put the knife down and put hold the avocado with two hands, one on each side of the cut and twist in opposite directions. To get the pit out, get a chopping knife and with a swift motion and a bit of pressure jam the blade of the knife into the pit. Once

firmly in, give the knife a little twist while twisting the avocado in a separate direction. It should slide right out.

Once the toast is done, use a butter knife to spread the avocado onto the toast. I usually do one-half avocado per piece of toast but this really depends on the size of your avocado and your bread.

Next, you want to cut a lemon in half and give it a good squeeze over each piece of toast. I probably add about a quarter of a teaspoon per slice of toast, if not more.

Finally top with salt, pepper and hemp seeds. Voila! Your basic avocado toast is ready.

Basic avocado toast

You will repeat this process the same way for all variations of avocado toast and then you will add the remaining ingredient on top.

Egg on Avocado Toast

Hard boil eggs for 8 minutes (less if you prefer a softer yolk). Immediately after they have cooked put them in a bowl with cold water and ice to stop the cooking process. There is nothing worse than a dry yolk on a piece of dry toast. Even the creaminess of the avocado can’t save it.

After cooling the eggs, peel them and slice them. You want to get 4-5 slices out of the egg just to cover the toast. If you slice the eggs too think it will probably get a bit too messy too.

Smoked Salmon Avocado Toast

Once your basic toast is ready, add as many slices of smoked salmon as you’d like. If you’re just venturing into the world of smoked salmon a nice single layer will add plenty of flavour without being overpowering. If you’re in love with smoked salmon, load it up.

Because salmon and avocado are both very fatty you definitely need to break up the monotony. I like to do this by adding the finely diced red onion. It adds sharpness to the overall flavour and a wonderful crunch to the texture. Top with some fresh dill or capers.

Balsamic Tomato Avocado Toast

This version of avocado toast has just two extra steps: slice some tomato and pour balsamic vinegar. I do also like to add some sprouts to top this off. Try alfalfa or broccoli sprouts. They are very delicate and mildly flavoured adding a great balance to the meatier tomato.

You can definitely also take this to the next level by adding a balsamic glaze or reduction. To do this, you will need to cook down a cup of balsamic vinegar until it reduces by about half. At this point, it should be nice and thick and will be sweeter than the original vinegar.

Avocado Toast with Radishes

avocado toast with radishesAvocado toast with radishes is a fresh take on avocado toast. The radishes provide sharpness and crunch that balances the avocado beautifully.

Trim and wash 3-4 radishes. The quantity will depend on the size of the radishes and on your personal preference for the radish to toast ratio. Once cleaned, thinly slice each radish and layer onto the avocado toast. You can sprinkle with some additional salt and pepper and also top with a sprout like alfalfa or broccoli for added nutrients and flavour.

Fried Egg on Avocado Toast

find egg on avocado toast with srirachaFried eggs on avocado toast make for a complete breakfast. A soft yolk will give you a beautiful sauce over your already delicious toast. Add a drizzle of sriracha for a little extra punch to this already flavourful dish.

Substitutions

Bread: This is really dealer’s choice. You can’t go wrong here if you just cater to your own taste. I personally prefer a simple bread that won’t overpower or interfere with everything else on top. I also adore a whole grain bread full of seeds to complement the avocado further.

Lemon: Lime isn’t always a good substitute for lemon but lucky for us, this is not one of those times. Feel free to use lime instead and don’t be afraid to be generous with your squeeze.
