This turkey meatloaf is made to cater to the kiddos. With a little bit of tasty cheese and a perfectly curated sauce, ahem… ketchup, every child will be wanting more.
Growing up, we only ever had meatloaf on special occasions. I never understood why because I LOVE meatloaf and could easily eat it every week. Once I discovered that meatloaf can be made in many different ways it made it that much easier to make meatloaf a regular part of our menu.
Preparing the Turkey Meatloaf
Start by preheating your oven to 350°F.
While you’re waiting for the oven to warm up, add all ingredients into the bowl of the stand mixer or into a large bowl. Mix until all ingredients are combined, plus another 30 seconds. If you are not using a stand mixer, I recommend that you use your hands. This will be the most efficient way to combine the ingredients well. You don’t want to overmix as that will make your meatloaf denser.
Spray the loaf pan with cooking spray or grease with butter or oil.
Pour the meat mixture into the loaf pan. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a rubber spatula. Spread out the meat mixture in the pan to make sure it is level to ensure even baking. I also like to use a rubber spatula for this because the meat won’t stick to it.
Place the pan in the warm oven and bake for 60 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. The duration will depend on the size of the loaf pan you are using. I used a standard loaf pan which is about 8.5” x 4.5’’.
Let the meatloaf sit for a few minutes before slicing to lock in all the juices.
Substitutions
I like to use turkey or chicken for this recipe because the meatloaf ends up very moist. You can also use fattier meat like pork. If you do, I recommend you reduce the amount of milk by half.
The cheese is optional but if you do choose to add it any cheese you have handy will do. The more flavourful the cheese the more it will change the taste of the meatloaf. I use a medium cheddar so as to not overpower the meatloaf.
Serving Turkey Meatloaf
Cut the meatloaf into 8 equal pieces. This recipe yielded 8 one-inch pieces, using a standard loaf pan.
Pair this turkey meatloaf with freshly cooked whole potatoes, or my favourite, mashed potatoes, with our carrot and apple slaw on the side.
