This simple butter lettuce salad is so light and tasty that it will leave you wanting more and more. The creamy dressing is slightly sweet and a bit sharp creating the perfect balance of flavours. Â
Simple butter lettuce salad is actually the easiest salad you can make especially with a creamy dressing. It’s basically lettuce with a dressing.
But don’t worry, the dressing will knock your socks off. It’s a pleasant surprise of sweetness and peppercorn sharpness. The perfect balance!
Lettuce isn’t a popular food in polish cuisine so this butter lettuce salad is the only one I remember having. It’s simple but delicious and to me, it screams Sunday dinner.  Â
Preparing the Simple Butter Lettuce Salad
Ingredients
Butter Lettuce: Butterhead-type lettuces are known for their buttery taste, delicate texture, and loosely packed heads. We use the Boston variety for this recipe.
Sour cream: Sour cream is made from cream from dairy milk. Lactic acid bacteria is added to sweet cream creating a thick, tangy and creamy substance.
Sugar: White or granulated sugar is refined sugar made from either cane sugar or beet sugar. It is completely freed of molasses through the refining process and ground into granules smaller than salt.

How to Make Simple Butter Lettuce Salad with Creamy Dressing
Start by prepping the lettuce. Wash the lettuce and break off the leaves.
How to wash and prep butter lettuce:
Gently grab the roots of the butter lettuce as close to the head as you can. Using your other hand push against the head to break away the roots with the core. Do this all the way around to remove the core.
See our video on how to clean and prep butter lettuce.
Dry the leaves using a salad spinner or air dry on a towel. If you use a salad spinner make sure to be very gentle as the leaves are very breakable.
You can chop the leaves if they are too large but I like to leave them whole. Part of the appeal of butterhead lettuce is that it’s very delicate. This means it’s easy to break and/or fold as you eat it.
Now make the dressing. Combine the remaining ingredients in a small bowl. Stir well until all the sugar has dissolved. Use a spoon to stir and you’ll be able to feel when the sugar has dissolved.
When you first start stirring, the bottom of the spoon against the bottom of the bowl will feel gritty. As the sugar dissolves this grittiness will begin to smooth.
Add the lettuce to a large bowl and drizzle the creamy dressing over top. You can toss or leave it as is.
I like to add fresh herbs to the salad for extra flavour and nutrients. If you choose to add herbs as well, wash and chop the dill and parsley and add them to the bowl.
