Everyday French Toast (Freezer-Friendly)

French toast does not have to be a special weekend meal. Make a double batch and freeze to throw into a toaster and serve mid-week, or pack it for a school lunch.

Everyday French toast is for every day of the week, or any day of the week if you don’t want to get sick of it. There is something about the texture of the egg-dipped toast that makes it feel like clouds in your mouth.

I rarely ate French toast before having kids. Making such an elaborate breakfast seemed like too much work in the mornings. Somehow, now that I am busier than ever, I a

lways seem to find time to make this delicious breakfast.

With that said, it’s still just a weekend endeavor. I make a double batch on the weekend and freeze the rest for a really easy breakfast on a weekday. Just nuke the frozen French toast in the microwave then pop it in a toaster and voila! French toast on the table in less than a few minutes.

Preparing Everyday Frech Toast

Ingredients

Bread: Bread is made from water and flour, and sometimes other ingredients, and is baked as a loaf. It comes in many different varieties, shapes and sizes. It’s most commonly made from wheat however there are many different flours that yield delicious bread. Out favourites for this recipe are toast bread and rye bread, but sourdough is also at the top of the list.

Milk: I use full fat (3.25%) or partly skimmed (2%) cow’s milk for this recipe. The milk makes the toast more fluffy.

Eggs: Eggs are laid by many different animals but chicken eggs are the star of this recipe. Eggs provide protein, fat and many other nutrients and therefore are a healthy part of our diet.

Brown sugar: Brown sugar is a mixture of white sugar and molasses. Molasses is responsible for the darker color.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a spice that is actually made out of the inner bark of the tree. You can commonly buy cinnamon sticks or ground cinnamon. This recipe calls for ground cinnamon.

Vanilla: Pure vanilla extract is made by soaking vanilla bean in water and ethyl alcohol. You can get pure vanilla extract or vanilla extract flavour. The latter may be made from synthetic vanillin to mimic the flavour. There is no preference in this recipe but know that imitation vanilla is usually more budget-friendly than pure vanilla.

Coconut oil: Coconut oil is one of my secret ingredients in this recipe, even though it’s just used for frying. Though the flavour is quite subtle it adds just enough to elevate the overall taste of the French toast.

How to Make Everyday French Toast

I like to use a 9×9 baking dish for the egg mixture. This way I can easily fit the toast without wasting an ounce of the mixture. You can use any medium or large bowl. In the bowl or dish combine all ingredients except the bread and oil. Whisk it all together to combine well.

TIP: Keep the whisk in the bowl to stir the mixture periodically to disburse the cinnamon. It likes to float at the surface so the first few pieces of toast always get more cinnamon. So stir stir stir!

Add a teaspoon of oil to a large frying pan and warm on medium heat. Once the oil is heated, place a slice of bread in the egg mixture for 5 seconds. Flip and leave in for another 5 seconds. Depending on the type of bread you use, you may need to keep it in the egg mixture for longer or shorter. You want the bread to absorb some of the egg but you don’t want it to become saturated. You should be able to pick up the toast using tongs without it falling apart.

Cooking French Toast

Place the dipped slice of bread in the hot pan and fry for 3-4 minutes on each side. Repeat the process for each slice of bread cooking in batches. Only dip the bread in the egg mixture right before you put it in the pan.  If you run out of space in the pan wait until you have room before dipping another slice.

You can keep another baking dish in a 200°F oven. Add the cooked French toast to keep it warm while you finish cooking the remaining batches.

TIP: Freeze any leftovers individually on a cookie sheet. Once frozen, transfer to an air-tight container. To defrost, put the toast in a toaster for 2 minutes and serve as directed below.

Serving Everyday French Toast

I could eat French toast all on its own! But it definitely does not hurt to top it with a drizzle of maple syrup. Don’t be afraid to add some fresh berries and powdered sugar as another delicious option.

For the kids, we cut the toast into fingers to make French toast sticks. Serve the maple syrup on the side to create some dipping fun!

How do you heat frozen everyday french toast?

There are a few ways to defrost french toast. My favourite, and what I believe to be the fastest way, is to nuke the french toast in the microwave for 30-60 seconds, then pop it in the toaster on your normal toast setting.

This method quickly defrosts the french toast and thanks to the toaster you still get a crispy edge. Just like freshly made.

Substitutions

Texas toast (that’s the thick-cut toast bread) is most commonly used for French toast. However, the type of bread really boils down to preference. We usually have regular toast or rye bread in the house so that’s what we use. Any bread that is slightly dense will work well.
