Cast Iron Striploin Steak

Make a traditional date night meal in the comfort of your own home with the perfect cast iron striploin steak.

There is really nothing better than perfectly cooked striploin steak. It’s juicy and tender and with our delicious marinade and sauce its incredibly full of flavour.

Steak is a special treat at our house so we want to make sure we make it just right to make the most of the meal. We usually reserve this meal for date night seeing as our children would never appreciate it. Or eat it for that matter.

Don’t forget to pair this striploin with a bottle of your favourite Cabernet Sauvignon or a sweeter wine like Apothic Red Blend.

Preparing Cast Iron Striploin Steak

Make the Marinade

This striploin steak marinade is so simple and so delicious. But, it is definitely optional. If you prefer your steak plain, simply season it generously with salt and pepper and move on to the next section.

If you would like a marinade, start it about 35 minutes before you plan to start cooking. Combine the pressed garlic and soy sauce in a 9×9 baking dish.

Trim any extra fat around the edges of your steaks.

Place the steaks into the marinade in the glass dish. Flip them once to coat both sides and place them in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Make the Dijon Sause

Just before the marinating is all done prep the dijon mustard sauce. This is also the time you want to preheat your oven to 425ºF and take the steak out of the fridge to bring it to room temperature.

This sauce, like the marinade, is optional. If you’re just looking to make a plain striploin steak, skip to the next section.

If you choose to make the sauce, start by putting the butter in a microwave-safe bowl for 10 seconds to melt.

Next, add the mustard and horseradish and mix well.

Set aside to let the sauce thicken.

How to Cook a Striploin Steak in a Cast Iron Skillet

Finally, we are moving on to the most important part of the recipe, the steak! We use a combination of stovetop and oven to cook the perfect steak.

If you haven’t already preheated your oven to 425ºF, do so now. You want to make sure your oven is hot and ready before you start with the next step.

To start the cooking process, add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to a cast iron skillet. Turn on the burner under the cast iron to medium-high heat.

The timing here matters so use our timers to help you along.

DID YOU KNOW that we provide a built-in timer for some of our recipes for desktop users?

Look for the times that are bolded and green. Then click on the time and the timer will start.

Place the steaks in the hot cast iron skillet and set a timer (or click on the coloured bolded text) to 2 minutes. Do not disturb the steaks once in the skillet.

The steak on the left has been marinated. The steak on the right is seasoned with salt and pepper.

When 2 minutes are up, flip the steaks and once again set the timer for another 2 minutes. Again, do not disturb the steaks.

Once the next 2 minutes are up, move the whole cast iron skillet into the oven. Set your timer to 4 minutes for medium doneness. The steak should be 140ºF internal temperature for medium doneness. See notes for additional temperatures.

TIP: When removing the steaks from the oven, they should be about 5ºF below your desired temperature. They will continue to cook when while resting.

Remove the cast iron skillet from the oven and move the steaks to a cutting board to rest. Set your timer to 5 minutes.

Once the steak is done resting you are ready to serve.

Serving Steak

Plate your steak and top it with the Dijon topping, add your favourite sides, pour the wine and enjoy!

Steak is so incredible on its own but I find that a side takes it to another level. There is nothing like steak with a side of fries or a baked potato. Add some asparagus or Caesar salad and you have a restaurant-worthy meal right in your own kitchen.
