If you feel like rice pudding but don’t feel like making rice pudding this cinnamon rice yogurt is the next best thing. It’s super simple and so delicious.
Cinnamon rice yogurt may sound strange but it’s just my lazy way to settle my rice pudding craving. Is it as creamy? No. Is it as fluffy? Well, no.
BUT, it’s equally as delicious and takes about 95% less effort to make so it’s a win in my books.
This is one of my favourite snacks. It’s easy, tasty and filling and satisfies a sweet craving all in one. And oddly I actually prefer it when the rice is still hot.
Preparing Cinnamon RIce Yogurt
Ingredients
Vanilla yogurt: Greek yogurt is yogurt that has had whey and other liquids strained from it. It’s thicker and creamier than other types of yogurt. Vanilla is just flavouring that is added to plain Greek yogurt, although there are often added sugars as well.
Rice: Short-grain rice is more starchy than long-grain rice and is, therefore, a bit more sticky when cooked. In this dish, we don’t want the rice to be too sticky so we have specified a cooking time that ensures it is not overcooked.
Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a spice that is actually made out of the inner bark of the tree. You can commonly buy cinnamon sticks or ground cinnamon. This recipe calls for ground cinnamon.
How to Make Cinnamon Rice Yogurt
As you can imagine this is the easiest recipe you can make. It’s so easy you can get your toddlers to learn by making them do it (with your assistance of course).
Step 1: Cook the Rice
I highly recommend making this recipe when you have rice leftovers rather than cooking rice just to make it but if you like it enough or need a big batch then by all means.
If you don’t already have leftover rice you will have to cook some. To get ½ a cup of cooked rice you will need ¼ of uncooked rice cooked in ½ cup of water.
TIP: Cook short-grain rice in milk or coconut milk to get an extra creamy consistency.
I actually like this recipe best when the rice is still warm so feel free to try it that way too.
Step 2: Make the Pretend Rice Pudding
Once the rice is ready, combine it with the yogurt and cinnamon. Stir well to make sure the cinnamon is evenly distributed.
Substitutions
Yogurt: If you don’t have vanilla yogurt I recommend you use Greek yogurt instead and add ¼ – ½ tsp vanilla to taste. If you prefer a runnier consistency you can use plain yogurt instead.
Rice: Any rice you have will be fine in this recipe. Since we’re just trying to use up leftovers we aren’t picky. If you are cooking rice specifically for this dish then I recommend you use short grain rice. If you choose brown rice you’ll add a bit of extra fiber as well.

I did the same thing myself and was looking if someone else had ever tried it! The result is so good and the preparation is so easy. I’m glad that I found someone else who also did it!
The other recipes call for heating the rice and the yogurt (or whatever liquid you use). Well, that would kill the probiotics in the yogurt, so it’s a no go for me. It works just fine without heating.
Thanks for sharing! I am also glad that others do this. Its such an easy and delicious treat 🙂 Thanks for visiting!
