The Best Homemade Sloppy Joes Recipe

Delicious, sweet and very hearty, these homemade sloppy joes are truly the best. They are a fun twist on your average burger with a ketchup sauce your kids will adore.

Equipment

Ingredients
 
 

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 6 brioche buns
  • 1 tbsp butter for buns
  • cup onion (1/4 of an onion)
  • 1 tsp garlic (1 large clove)

Sauce:

  • ½ cup passata
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp pepper

Optional Additions:

  • Mushrooms
  • bell pepper
  • Carrots

Instructions
 

  • Add the beef to a pan and break up using a spatula. Brown on medium heat.
    1 lb lean ground beef
  • While the meat cooks, peel and dice the onion and peel the garlic.
    1 tsp garlic, 1/3 cup onion
  • Next, make the sauce by combining all of the sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Stir until fully combined and the sugar is dissolved.
    ½ cup passata, ¼ cup ketchup, 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 1 tbsp brown sugar, ½ tsp salt, ½ tsp pepper
  • Once the meat is browned, add the onions and cook for 2-3 minutes. If you are adding any other vegetables, this is the time to add them diced to the pan.

  • Then press in the garlic and cook for another minute.
    1 tsp garlic
  • Finally, add the sauce and stir to coat all the meat evenly. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover and cook for 8-10 minutes depending on how saucy you like it. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  • Butter the inside of each bun and toast on a pan for a couple of minutes, buttered side down. You can cheat and toast these in the toaster on the bagel setting.
    1 tbsp butter for buns, 6 brioche buns
  • Top the buns with sloppy joes and add your favourite toppings. I like to keep it simple with some pickle slices or banana peppers.
