Preparing Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Onions
Ingredients
Brussels sprouts: These mini cabbages are not actually cabbages at all but they are from the same family. Brussels sprouts are cruciferous vegetables along with cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage kale, kohlrabi and collard greens. They are rich in fiber, potassium, vitamin C and even contain protein.
Yellow onion: Onion is a very common vegetable that is used both raw and cooked in food preparation. It has a sharp flavour raw that often sweetens once cooked. There are many varieties of onions, some that are milder than others. We use the common onion or yellow onion in this recipe.
Bacon: Bacon is salt cure pork from different cuts of the back. It is typically sold in slices. There are also non-pork alternatives such as turkey bacon that can also be used.
Garlic powder: Garlic powder is dehydrated garlic ground to a powder. It’s sweeter than raw garlic so it just adds a hint of garlic flavour without the sharpness.
How to Make Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Onions
With just three easy steps you will have these Brussels sprouts with bacon and onions on the table in no time.
Before you start your prep, preheat the oven to 425°F
Step 1: Prep the ingredients
Start by prepping the Brussels sprouts. This will be the most work you’ll have to do to make this dish. Cut the bottom stem off the Brussels sprouts then cut them in half length-wise. Discard any loose leaves that fall off. Next, wash the Brussels sprouts in cold water. You can soak them for a few minutes while you prep the rest.
Now peel and dice the onion and dice the bacon into ¼-inch pieces.
Step 2: Season the Brussels Sprouts
Now add the Brussels Sprouts to a large bowl. You can also add the onions and bacon.
Add garlic powder, salt and pepper if you’re using it. Toss everything using two silicone spatulas until the Brussels Sprouts are well coated.
Â
Step 3: Bake
Finally, it is time to line a large sheet pan with parchment paper and spread out the mixture in an even layer.
Bake in the oven for 15 minutes tossing once halfway.
